The space
This home has a big backstory! It was designed by the University of Michigan schools of architecture and engineering for a Department of Energy competition in 2005. The house was transported to Washington DC and set up for judging. It was later moved back to Michigan and served as a display of sustainability in the Botanical Gardens. Later it was sold into private ownership and used as an off grid homestead. We acquired this unique home, transported it to Ohio (the name MiSo - Michigan Solar - in Ohio) and engaged in a couple year process of restoring all the original components of passive and active heating, cooling and power. Many of our Amish neighbors and tradesmen assisted in the restoration - who better than the Amish to assist in off grid living?! While our effort is to preserve all the students’ original design in sustainable living, we do have back up grid tie power available for those long gray winter days.
Guest access
Guests may access the entire house, private backyard and sunny front deck. The only part of the house that is locked to guests is except the basement which houses the battery bank and central utility closets where inverters and other components are located. If a guest desires to see and hear explanations of how all these components function, reach out and Brian will give a full tour. The pond is on the neighbor’s property and not included in this vacation home.
Other details
The sauna is wood fired and takes about 15-20 minutes to reach temperature. We can assist with fire starting and other prep on request. While the house is designed to be completely off grid, if there is a sustained period of cloudy days, we do have an option for grid tie electric to make your stay comfortable. The house is located in a very sunny, open area with fields. There are two neighboring houses visible from the backyard. There is an abundance of wildlife (deer, fox, turkeys, ducks, raccoons) in the area. Please do not feed wildlife or leave food outside.
Interaction with guests
This is a self sustaining home. If there are any issues, we live a short distance away and can assist.

Nestled in these Rollinghills, the experience of staying in this unique house is best categorized by calmness and relaxation. It’s bucolic setting just adds to the adventures and activities available in the area from the Ohio Erie top path the Falls and the nature center staying in the house makes it such an amazing collective experience. We had a poor experience elsewhere causing our honeymoon to be uprooted luckily we found this gem close by. It was stunning. The building itself is super cool with a fascinating backstory but it was also private and the back patio was the perfect relaxation I was looking for in a honeymoon. We were able to look out to rolling hills during the day and in the evening we got to stargaze right from the couch. This place is really a gem and we will be back one day. The hosts were amazing with snacks and fresh flowers for the space despite our extremely last minute booking. We truly loved every second we were there and didn’t want to leave the peaceful atmosphere.

My husband and I stayed here for our 10yr anniversary weekend and it was amazing! It is such a fun, unique stay that is also very tranquil. This was the perfect, peaceful getaway for us. We really enjoyed the unique solar house and backyard hangout. We did not use the sauna or pool, but the outdoor day bed swing is great for outdoor relaxing. It is set up on a hill and is very open, but also private at the same time. We enjoyed the view, and felt secluded hanging out in the backyard. Inside, the space is perfect for a couple. The kitchen is well equipped, and the hosts are amazing and very accommodating. Rachel had a small welcome and anniversary gift for us when we arrived which is so thoughtful, and I really appreciated all the detailed local recommendations that were sent over. We both the unique blend of vintage and modern amenities and decor. Short drive away to many activities! Just be aware it uses well water, so the water does have an unpleasant odor, but still highly recommend

Come for the cool house stay for the tranquility and amazing hosting. I'll admit this house is an odd-duck, but it's scientific provenance won me over and it delivers. As you approach the house on the gravel road you are greeted by it's unique profile and large window. Entering almost brings you onto the set of a sci-fi show with the stark white walls and unique geometry. Once the amazement of the visuals calms down you start to notice the details. The first thing we noticed was just how functional this small house is. despite the small floor size, we never felt cramped. This may be due to the amazing staging the host has done. The furniture is comfortable and fits right in. Furniture selection is clearly not their only forte as just about every detail shows excellent ability as hosts. From the leaving signs on supplies for the sauna to leaving a light on for our late arrival. An absolute wonderful stay on every metric.
